The first group to arrive at Tiananmen Square in solidarity was a group of young professors from some of the universities in Beijing, many of whom embraced each other and cried. More than 700 members of the Peace and Democracy Petition Group from Tianjin University and Nankai University also came to Tiananmen Square. Every time a new solidarity group appeared, it went around the square and attracted thousands of students and people to follow. Beijing residents brought boiled water, soft drinks, sugar, and medicine for the hunger strikers.

31年前的今天，建国以来的第一次知识界大游行。正如参加游行的一位青年作家所言：我们以今天的行动证明，中国的知识分子并不都是缺钙的软骨病患者。

This was the first demonstration of the intellectual community since the establishment of Communist China in 1949, which not only inspired the students but also shook the citizens. The march of intellectuals was unusual, as one of the young writers who participated in the march said: "We proved by our actions today that Chinese intellectuals are not all cartilaginous patients with calcium deficiency."(In other words, turning a blind eye to the evil deeds of the authority.)
